Paul Bentley was introduced to me and my business partner through the IIB. At the time, we had a thriving business, which had grown faster than we could manage. We had few management systems because we had not thought about them. We were so immersed in the business growth that we were dealing with problems after they arose rather than anticipating them.
Paul’s first step was to get to understand the business. Once he did this, he helped us to create a sensible management structure and put in place personnel and health and safety support. At all times, he looked to find what worked for us.
It took Paul to point out to us that the business’ biggest failing was the Partner’s communications with each other. We implemented a monthly meeting with the partners and the senior manager, which Paul would chair with the result that we had proper time to decide matters for the business.
Paul also designed a database driven system that allowed better management of projects. The system ensured that all staff had access to appropriate information on projects in which they were involved, allowing proper information sharing and process monitoring.
Unfortunately, my partner died in August 2007. I feel that were it not for Paul’s work in creating controls, I would have had great difficulty in continuing the business.
